Gold's week of whiplash: back above $4,000 after the midterms, then a pause

In five trading days gold has fallen, bounced, jumped and paused. That is the kind of two-way market we expect for a while yet, on the way to gold's next big high in November 2027.

The week in one paragraph

Last Friday gold fell more than 3% and silver more than 6%. On Monday both bounced. On Wednesday, after the US midterm results, gold rose about 2.5% in a morning and was back above $4,000 for the first time in two weeks, while silver gained about 4%. Today a stronger-than-expected October jobs report lifted the US dollar and gold gave back part of that rise. Even after the rebound, gold is still more than a quarter below its January record.

What moved gold this week

The midterm results. Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate. Markets read that as a weaker dollar and lower Treasury yields, and both help gold, which pays no interest and is priced in dollars.

Rate expectations swinging both ways. Early in the week the odds of a December Fed rate hike slipped. Today's strong jobs report pushed them back up. Each shift moved gold within hours.

Oil and the Middle East. Talks to ease the conflict around the Strait of Hormuz continued without a breakthrough, keeping oil, and with it inflation worries, in the headlines.

Central banks still buying. Reports this week pointed to central bank gold buying at its highest level of the year. That kind of steady, patient demand does not show up in daily moves, but it matters over years.

What our AstroPlanetary view says

Our short-term reading is event-based and updates hourly, and this week showed why: an election, a jobs report and oil headlines moved gold by several percent in each direction. On the planetary side we are in the unsettled stretch we described at the start of the month, with Jupiter having just changed sign and turning retrograde in December, and the Rahu–Ketu axis shifting in late November. In our framework that sky goes with sharp, two-way markets rather than a clean trend.

Our long-term view is unchanged. We see gold's next big high in November 2027, with ups and downs between now and then. This week packed both into five days.

What we would do this month

We would stay away from short-term investing in gold and silver in November. A week like this one, with moves of 2% to 3% in a day in both directions, is exactly where short-term positions get caught out.

In India, this is Dhanteras and Diwali week, a time when many families buy gold for tradition and the long term rather than for a quick move. That long-term mindset fits the market we are in. Everyone's situation is different, so if you are making a decision about your own money, speak to a qualified financial adviser.
